A combination of its composition and the memories it invokes makes this my favourite picture of the year, I think. On my birthday, back in March, some of my best friends and comrades joined together to support an Aberystwyth group protesting against the loss of their Day Centre. For anyone who doesn’t know, Day Centres typically offer older people a space to socialise, access services and engage in range of activities. The Aberystwyth group protest every Saturday and have kept it up for 4 years! Their own Day Centre has long gone, demolished to make way for the building of a Tesco, but the group keep protesting to challenge the council on Day Centre provision in the county. My friends and I covered the wall around the site with creative graffiti – poems, pictures, slogans, quotes… We dressed as super heroes: Twm Siôn Cati (‘the Welsh Robin Hood’), Hit Girl, V and… And a man in a white lab coat and trilby! (who knows with Bongo!). Afterwards, we drank good beer at the pub, sitting out in the sun (in my memory anyway) in the courtyard by the train station. In the evening, Lotte and I went out to eat Caribbean food. In the words of Lou Reed: ‘This was a perfect day…’
I am he as you are he as you are me, and we are all together
