The Radical Technology Conference takes place in Bristol, 2nd - 4th September, revisiting and up-dating the ideas of the seminal 1976 book 'Radical Technology', an expression of the philosophy underpinning Undercurrents magazine. I'm sorry I can't be there, but happy to have contributed an essay reflecting on the Engineering Design and Appropriate Technology degree course I did back in the early 1980s, and specifically the problematic question of defining appropriate technology. Very best wishes to conference participants, especially Peter Harper for continuing to question and motivate, and my own thanks to the inspiration of E F Schumacher, the encouraging pedagogy of Terry Thomas at Warwick University, and the friendship with numerous appropriate technologists I've made, and in some cases maintained over the years. Much criticised for its paternalistic approach but still inspirational in its humanism...
